Minerals are essential nutrients that the body needs to function correctly. They play crucial roles in metabolism, bone health, immune function, and nerve signaling. Without adequate mineral intake, various health issues can develop. This article explores the effects of six essential minerals—calcium, copper, iodine, magnesium, manganese, and zinc—on human health.

Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is essential for bone and teeth health, muscle function, and nerve signaling. It plays a significant role in preventing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones. A calcium deficiency can lead to muscle spasms, weakened bones, and increased risk of fractures.1

In addition to bone health, calcium is crucial for proper blood clotting and heart function. It works together with vitamin D to enhance absorption and effectiveness. Dairy products and leafy greens, almonds, and parsley are all good sources of calcium. In fact, many non-dairy sources of calcium provide more calcium per serving than milk, cheese, and other dairy products.

Copper

Copper is an essential trace mineral that contributes to energy production, the formation of red blood cells, and the maintenance of connective tissues. It is also important for brain function and immune system health. A copper deficiency can lead to anemia, weakened bones, and neurological problems.2

Copper also helps with the absorption and metabolism of iron, preventing iron-deficiency anemia. Additionally, it acts as an antioxidant by reducing oxidative stress in the body, which can help protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders.3 Good dietary sources of copper include shellfish, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and dark leafy greens.

Iodine

Iodine is a critical mineral required for thyroid hormone production, which regulates metabolism, energy production, and growth. Without enough iodine, a person may develop hypothyroidism, which can cause fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Severe iodine deficiency can lead to goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) and developmental issues in infants and children.4

Iodine deficiency is one of the leading causes of preventable intellectual disabilities worldwide. To ensure adequate intake, many countries add iodine to table salt. Other good sources of iodine include seafood, dairy products, and eggs.5

Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, and protein synthesis. It also plays an essential role in maintaining normal blood pressure and heart rhythm. A lack of magnesium can cause symptoms such as muscle cramps, fatigue, and abnormal heart rhythms.6

Research suggests that adequate magnesium intake may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It also contributes to bone health by working with calcium and vitamin D to strengthen bones; however, magnesium dietary supplements have not been shown to maintain strong bones. Good sources of magnesium include nuts, seeds, whole grains, and dark chocolate.7

Manganese

Manganese is necessary for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant function. It helps in the production of connective tissue and supports brain function. Deficiency in manganese is rare but can lead to bone abnormalities, impaired growth, and reduced glucose tolerance.8

Manganese also plays a role in protecting the body from oxidative stress by activating antioxidant enzymes. Some studies suggest it may help in reducing inflammation and supporting brain health. Dietary sources of manganese include nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy vegetables.9

Zinc

Zinc is a vital mineral for immune system function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis. It also supports growth and development, making it especially important for children and pregnant women. A zinc deficiency can result in weakened immune function, delayed wound healing, and increased susceptibility to infections.10

Zinc plays a key role in enzyme function, as over 300 enzymes in the body require zinc to perform biological reactions. It is also essential for taste perception, and a deficiency can lead to loss of appetite. The body does not store zinc, so it must be consumed regularly through diet or in a dietary supplement. Zinc-rich foods include meat, shellfish, dairy products, and legumes.11
